Bayside Special Developmental School's Southside Cafe provides real world experiences so all our students -both crew members and customers - can build their social, daily living and work skills, while using their own mode of communication.

The Southside Cafe Program at Bayside Special Developmental School provides real world experiences so all students- both crew members and customers can build their social, daily living and work skills, while using their own mode of communication. 

We didn't want an ordinary cafe. 

We wanted a cafe that would be accessible for all students so all students could be included, learn and be involved in every aspect of operation. 

The 2024 Graduands of Bayside SDS make up the Executive Committee and meet once a term to determine the Term Menu.

Crew Members: Each class has a different role each term. The Shopping Crew purchases the items needed for the Southside Cafe at the Supermarket. They put items into the basket, queue at the check-out, scan items, pay with a credit card and collect the receipt. The Unpacking Stockers Crew put the shopping away in the fridge or cupboard. The Food Preparation Crew prepares the food for the Cafe such as fruit boxes or freshly squeezed juices using adapted equipment for students who need it. The Customer Service Crew sets up the cafe, calls classes, greets customers, takes their orders, takes credit card payment, gives orders to customers and cleans up.

Customers: Build their financial literacy skills by taking responsibility and carrying their "credit" card that they use in the cafe. They make a food choice, tap their card on the EFTPOS machine and collect their food.
