Brian shares his
memorable TIP moment

In 2019, Chair Bernie Lloyd and I had the pleasure of presenting a Teaching Initiatives Program (TIP) grant at a beautiful school in the Dandenong Ranges in a town called Sassafras.

Principal Stacey Goodger had a wonderful line, “We’re a little school - but we try to bat above our average!” Stacey wasn't kidding!

The school applied for funding for an innovative Makerspace that would bring kids together to use technology to build things. I was blown away by the passion of staff and students.

As always, our visit was so much more than a cheque and a handshake.

Bernie shared her personal connection to the school. Her father led and taught there before she was old enough to attend school herself!

Incredibly, Bernie’s first taste of life in a classroom happened before she was old enough to attend class. While Dad taught up the front, Bernie was quietly taking it all in at the back of the classroom.

With such an affinity for the school, one teacher commented, “That’s the best flashback I have heard on a Friday!”

It’s always great to see our connection to education acknowledged and celebrated.

There’s more to a TIP grant than a handshake and a cheque. Our people have strong relationships within the education sector and, on school visits, see the benefit of TIP funding for grassroots school projects.
